In Bezug auf das physische und psychische Wohlbefinden fungierte ein hoher expliziter oder impliziter Selbstwert als Schutzfaktor vor gesundheitlichen Einschränkungen und dem Erleben von negativem Affekt. Ein hoher expliziter Selbstwert zeigte sich negativ verbunden mit Depressionen, während ein hoher impliziter Selbstwert als Indikator für diese angesehen werden kann. Die klassische Konditionierung erwies sich als probates Mittel, um das implizite Selbstwertgefühl zu steigern, die Untersuchungen zeigten zudem, dass es bei fehlender kognitiver Kapazität (z. B. durch Zeitdruck ausgelöst) explizite Betrachtung erfahren kann.

Das Selbstwertgefühl hinsichtlich seiner Unterteilung in explizites und implizites Selbstwertgefühl zu betrachten, erscheint unter den gegebenen Ergebnissen sinnvoll.
